3 Garage Door Safety Tips To Keep In Mind For Families

Posted on

If you're like many homeowners, you likely use your garage door multiple times per day, and yet, the garage door can be one of the most neglected parts of the home when it comes to performing regular maintenance. In addition to oiling up the chains and other moving parts, you'll also want to take steps to ensure the garage door continues to operate safely, especially if you have young children at home. Here are 3 garage door safety tips to keep in mind.

Make Sure the Reversal Sensor is Working Properly

Every modern garage door is required to have a mechanism installed that will automatically reverse the direction of the door if someone walks under it while it is moving. It is especially critical that you ensure that this sensor is working correctly if you have young kids or pets in the home who might suddenly dart under door while it is operating. If you want to test the sensor out yourself, get a piece of wood or something else sturdy that measures about three feet in height and place it directly under the door while it is open. When the door gets within a few inches of the top of the wood it should stop and come back up. If it actually makes contact, something is wrong and you need to get it looked at by a garage door services firm.

Don't Give Your Children Easy Access to the Opener

When installing the garage door opener inside your garage, make sure it is at a height that is too high for any child to reach. It may be a minor inconvenience for you to have to stretch a little bit to reach the button, but you don't want to give any children the opportunity to play around with it. Some garage door openers can even be installed with an electric keypad  and code on the inside of the garage, further childproofing the device.

Make Sure the Garage is Off Limits

If you don't park your vehicles inside the garage all the time and use it for other activities, your child may get the idea that it's OK to go and have some play time in there. Set a strict policy that no child is allowed into the garage with the supervision of an adult. If your child has friends coming over, make sure they also know this policy or consider locking the garage door from inside the house if that is an option.

Garage door safety may seem like common sense, but if you have small children at home, you'll need to take some extra steps to ensure everyone's safety. A regular inspection of the garage door is always a good idea, including the reversal sensor.
